1276 Excerpt from "A Bedfordshire Family" by William Austin:

Thomas, eldest son of Robert Crawley, baptized at St Matthew's, Friday Street, 11th September 1638, was of London, merchant.

There must have been some lovable qualities in this man. He was a friend of Izaak Walton and a witness to his will; he was also a friend of William Boevey of Flaxley Abbey, in the county of Gloucester, and the executor of the will of his father-in-law, David Bonnell of Isleworth, in 1690, (146 Dyke).

He was married by licence (Vicar-General) dated 21st May 1677, at St Dunstan's in the East, to Mary, daughter of David Bonnell of Isleworth, Esq.

His will, dated 1st June 1711, was proved by his widow, Mary, in the P.C.C., 26th April 1714. Her will, dated 2nd April 1718, was proved, P.c.c., 25th October 1721 (177 Buckingham).

They had issue:-
I. David Crawley, baptized 4th March 1677-8, at St Dunstan's in the East Named in the will of the above-named William Boevey, proved 22nd October 1692..
2. Thomas Crawley, of whom next section.
3. John Crawley, baptized 21st February 1682-3, at St Dunstan's in the East. Executor and residuary legatee of Mrs Cornelia Bateman, born Boevey (1702). Living 1718; died unmarried.
4. Cornelia, married Petley Ley, Esq., of Deptford, Kent. Named; with daughter Anne Ley, in. her mother's will, dated 1718, proved 1721.
5. William Crawley, baptized 2nd December 1684, at St Dunstan's in the East; buried there 20th May 1685.


From "The Perverse Widow"

THOMAS, eldest son of ROBERT CRAWLEY (Section IV.), baptized at St. Matthew's, Friday Street, 11 September, 1638. Was of London, merchant. He was executor of the will of his uncle Thomas, proved 17 December, 1667, and was one of the witnesses to ISAAC WALTON'S will, 9 August, 1683 (see text, p. 82). He died at Twickenham in March, 1714. His will, dated 1 June, 1711, was proved by his widow Mary in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 26 April, 1714 (64 Aston).

He married by licence (Vicar-General), dated 21 May, 1677,* Mary, daughter of David Bonnell of Isleworth (see BONNELL Pedigree, Appendix VII., p. 203). Her will, dated 2April,1718, was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 25 October, 1721 (177 Buckingham).

Robert, son of Thomas Crawley was of London, merchant, citizen, and grocer. He was named in the wills of his father, his brother Thomas, and his sister Mary.

He married, at Enfield, Middlesex, Elizabeth, daughter of John Shipton, St Matthew's, Friday Street, 21st December 1629. She was buried at Enfield, 15th July 1682. He died 12th February
1691-2. They had eleven children :

1. Elizabeth, baptized at Enfield, 15th September 1631.
2. Sarah, baptized at St Matthew's, Friday Street, 3rd October 1633; married ... Hilton.
3. Mary, baptized at St Matthew's, Friday Street, 4th December 1634; buried there, 16th March 1638-9.
4- Hannah, baptized at St Ma~thew's, Friday Street, 17th February 1635-6.
5. Thomas Crawley, eldest son and heir, of whom next section.
6. John Crawley, baptized at St Matthew's, Friday Street, 6th May 1640.
7. Mary (the second), baptized at StMatthew's, Friday Street, 13th May 1642.

1278 Excerpt from "History of a Bedfordshire Family" by William Austin

Thomas Crawley of King's Walden, gentleman, son of the last-named Thomas, lived and died at King's Walden. His will, dated 23rd September, was proved in November 1647, before the death of his father. He married at King's Walden, 28th June 1593, Sarah Basshope, by whom he had:-
I. Thomas Crawley of King's Walden, baptized 9th February 1597; buried 12th December 1667. Will dated 21st October, proved 17th December 1667.
2. Edward Crawley, second son, baptized at King's Walden, 27th August 1600; buried there 30th September 1667, leaving a widow, a son, and two daughters.

1279 Extract from "The Times" dated 20 April 1861
Death of General Charles Ashe A'Court (sic) Repington CB - The colonelcy of the 41st Regiment of Foot has become vacant by the death of General A'Court Repington, father of Lady Herbert of Lea, who died at 5 a.m. yesterday morning, at Armington (sic) Hall, near Tamworth, after a protracted illness. General Repington was the youngest son of Sir William Pierce Ashe A'Court, by his second marriage with Letitia, daughter of Mr. Henry Wyndham, of the College, Salisbury. he was born of the 20th of June, 1785, and married on the 10th of May, 1815, Mary the only daughter of Mr. Abraham Gibbs. The gallant General entered the army in 1801, and for the first 15 years saw much active service, having been detached on a separate command in 1806 to the Adriatic, to attack the islands of Tremitis, and in the same year assisted in the siege of Scylla. In 1807 he served in Egypt, and was present at the capture of Alexandria and in the action near Rosetta. At the siege and capture of Santa Maura he was in charge of the Quartermaster-General's Department; he was also at the siege of Capri the same year. When aide-de-campe to the Adjutant-General, when the enemy landed in Sicily in 1809 he commanded the advanced guard, to which nearly 1,000 prisoners surrendered, and he personally captured the enemies standard. The deceased General served afterwards on the Staff in Sicily, Spain, and Italy, and was present at Tarragons, action of Villa Franca, and retreat thence; subsequently, at the occupation of Leghorn, capture of Genoa, siege of Savona, and lastly at the surrender of Naples in 1815. the late General was for some time one of the Poor Law Commissioners. In 1818 he was made a Knight of the Hanoverian Order in recognition of his military services, and in 1831 was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. He was also a Knight of St. Ferdinand and Merit of Naples, and a Knight of St. Maurice and Lazare of Sardinia. In February, 1848, he was appointed Colonel of the 41st (the Welsh) Regiment of Foot, which by his death becomes at the disposal of the Commander-in- Chief. His commissions bear date as follow (sic) :-Ensign, December 17, 1801; Lieutenant, September 2, 1802; Captain, July 25, 1804; Major, February 22, 1811; Lieutenant-Colonel, May 19, 1813; Colonel, July 22, 1830; Major- General, November 23, 1841; Lieutenant-General, November 11, 1851; and General, February 20, 1856

Robert Cross s. of Robert Cross (1723-1792), of Gringley on the Hill, Notts.; a branch of this family evidently continued to reside here, as Walford's County Families (1864) gives: 'DODGSON, Richard Barton, Esq., of Beardwood, Lancashire. Son of the late - Dodgson, Esq.; b. 18-; m. 1857 Jane, 2nd dau. of James Cross, Esq., of Gringley-on-the-Hill, Notts. Is a magistrate for co. Lancaster. - Beardwood, near Blackburn, Lancashire.' Further, the Gentleman's Magazine in 1862 prints the following: 'Nov. 28 Aged 65, James Cross, esq., of Gringley, Nottinghamshire.' F. White's 1853 'History, Directory and Gazetteer of the County, and of the Town of Nottingham', under Gringley, notes that 'An unknown benefactor left to eight poor widows of this parish £1. yearly, out of an orchard which belongs to Mr. Cross.' Additionally, a posting on the Curious Fox site, evidently referring to this James Cross: 'I am the Great Granddaughter of William Littlewood Cross from Australia and am trying to find out about my family in Gringley on the Hill. James Cross (GG grandfather) born 1796 Gringley on the Hill married Ann Littlewood (born1807). Their eldest son, William Littlewood Cross (my Great Grandfather) was born in 1829 and arrived in Australia 1861.' Robert Cross (1723-1792) had married 1750, Sarah, dau. of - Fretwell.

Robert's father, John Cross (1691-), who m. 1717, Hannah, dau. of - Ward, and grandfather, Edmund Cross (c. 1660- c. 1720), who m. Anne, dau. of - Burton, were both of Gringley. Edmund's father appears to have been another Edmund (1612-1682).
