In the South African (Boer) War, served 1901-2 with 7th Hussars in operations in Cape Colony, Orange River Colony and Transvaal; awarded Queen's Medal, with five clasps. Captain, Ap. 1907. Seconded to be Brigade Major of Eastern Mounted Brigade (Territorial) March 1913-March 1916. In the Great War, served in Gallipoli (Anzac) October-December 1915: in Egypt December 1915-October 1916 (Staff Officer, Western Defence Force; Brigade Major, Coastal Area): in France, October-December 1917, as Major, 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regt.; in Mesopotamia Ap. 1918-Ap. 1919 with 7th Hussars and in command of them from September 1918. Wounded at Shergat, nr. Mosul, 28 October 1918. Awarded 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Allies' (Victory) War Medal: Croix de Guerre (avec palme): mentioned twice in despatches (1916 and 1919). Lieut.-Colonel 1919, and in the Regular Army Reserve of Officers from 1920. One of the Exons of the King's Bodyguard of Yeomen of the Guard from 1926.

409 7th son of Henry Martin Gibbs of Barrow Court. Baptised 26 February 1893 at Barrow Gurney. Educated at Eton College, 1906-12; matric. Oxford (Christ Church) October 1912.

Master of the Beagles at Eton in 1912 and at Christ Ch. Oxford, 1913. 2nd Lieut., North Somerset Yeomanry (Territ.) November 1912; Lieut. 1917; retired 1919. In the Great War served in France and Belgium October 1914 to May 1915; lost his left arm as the result of wound suffered at Ypres on 13 May 1915; Aide-de-Camp May to November 1918 to Major General Gorringe commanding 47th Divn. in France. Despatches 14 January 1915. 1914 Star. British War medal. Allies (Victory) medal.

Farming in Kenya from 1920 to 1929. Founded Kenya Coffee Co. in London 1921. A Trustee of St. Michael's Home in Cheddar. Portrait: min. by Gertrude Thomson last in possession of Rothesay Timothy Gibbs.

410 7th son. Born at 11 Bedford Square aforesaid 6 December 1830 and baptised 3 March 1831 at St. Giles-in-the-Fields. Educated at Eton College 1843-5, Charterhouse, London, 1845-7. Matric at Oxford (Exeter College) 31 January 1849. Died unmarried at Belmont, Wraxall 27 August 1860 and buried 1 September 1860 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription there. Will proved January 1857.

His schools before Eton & tutor after were the same as his brother John. During 1857-60 he owned the yacht Gondola in which he cruised (for his health) chiefly in the Mediterranean.

Portraits: a drawing of him by Jos. Slater (1835) and one (age about 25) by Paul are in possession of Lord Aldenham. A chalk by Eddis in possession of J.A. Gibbs.

413 8th son of George Henry Gibbs of London. Baptised 26 May 1832 at St.-Giles-in-the-Fields, Holborn. Educated at Eton College 1834-35 and Charterhouse, London, 1846-7. Matric at Oxford (Exeter College), 24 Oct. 1849, BA, a 'grand compounder, MA, 1856. Buried 15 January 1914 at Speen. Will proved 17 February 1914.

To add to the facts about education, he went to a school at Brighton about six or seven, and then to one at Clifton, Bristol. After Charterhouse he was, 1848-9, with a tutor, the rector of Poundstock, Cornwall. Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1854, but left them 1856 through ill-health, and in every year 1851 to 58 he travelled much abroad, particularly in Spain, and (1857-8) up the Nile and in Palestine. A student at Wells Theological College 1858. Ordained Deacon (Exeter) 1859, Priest 1860. Curate at St. Mary's, Torwood, Torquay, to Rev. J. Hogg 1859-1860, when his health drove him abroad again (Pyrenees) with his wife and first-born. Living at Bradeham, Bucks., 1863-4. Perpetual Curate of Clifton Hampden, Oxon., 1864 (presented by his brother Henry Hucks Gibbs), but resigned work in 1874 from the same cause as before. His parsonage there was what is now the Manor House. Resided at Oaklands, Cleveland, Somerset, 1874-8. Vicar of Exwick, Devon, 1878-85; Rector of Clyst St. George, Devon 1885-97 (presented to both by Antony Gibbs). Retired and resided at Speen House, Berks., 1898-1914. Editor of 'The Registers of Clyst St. George', published 1899 by The Parish Register Society. Member of the Athenauem Club, London, 1863-86. His diaries 1851-1912 (52 vols.), last in possession of John Arthur Gibbs in 1932 are now missing. The volume of his 'Reminiscences' (MS.) from c.1840 to 1910, now in the possession of Denis D. Gibbs.

415 9st son. Born at the farm on the estate of Belmont aforesaid, 9 August and baptised 20 September 1834 at Wraxall. Educated at Charterhouse, London 1844-52; matric at Oxford (Exeter College) 2 June 1852. Died unmarried at St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex 6 January and was buried 13 January 1857 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription there. Will proved January 1857.

Left Oxford 1854 through bad health and went to Spain and Madeira with his brother John and in 1855 to Pau with his sister Mary. His diaries 1853-6 (2 volumes) are in possession of J.A. Gibbs. See also n14. A water colour drawing of him by Paul is in possession of F.L. Gibbs.
