That same year, he beganhis law practice in Charleston and became active in Episcopal affairs.Moved to New York City around 1833 and continued his law practice there.Served as Commissioner of Deeds of South Carolina in New York City.Founder of churches and active in Episcopal affairs in the city. Duringthe Civil War, was a Peace Democrat in New York City.



    John Wroughten Mitchell was born in 1796 in Charleston, South Carolina. He married Timothy Green's daughter, Caroline, in 1825. The couple had three children; Clarence Green Mitchell, Anna Elizabeth Mitchell, and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell. John W. Mitchell practiced law in Charleston, South Carolina, beginning in 1817, and in New York when his family relocated in 1835. There, he formed a legal partnership with his brother-in-law, Timothy Ruggles Green. He was appointed the Commissioner of Deeds for Massachusetts in New York City in 1843 and for South Carolina in 1852. John W. Mitchell was active in the Episcopal Church in South Carolina and New York. He served as Treasurer of the Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Union Society and became a member of the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York. John W. Mitchell died in South Carolina in 1878. His wife Caroline died in 1860.

    Notes:

    Timothy Green was born in 1765. He resided in Worcester, Massachusetts with his wife Mary (aka "Polly" or "Serena") before moving to New York City. Green received his education at Rhode Island College (now Brown University) and practiced law in New York City. He predominantly worked in probate law and the settlement of minor financial disputes. Green was a land speculator and engaged in other mercantile affairs, especially with his brothers Samuel Green, who operated a store in Columbia, South Carolina, and Meltiah Green, who settled in Jamaica and died of yellow fever on the Island of St. Bartholomew. In December 1813, Timothy Green became lost at sea while returning from Charleston, South Carolina aboard the pilot boat, the Patriot . Colonel Aaron Burr's daughter, Theodosia was also onboard. Timothy Green's son, Timothy Ruggles Green, inherited the legal practice. Timothy and Mary's other children included Joseph Martin, Mary E., Martha Lynde Mitchell, Caroline Mitchell, and Elizabeth H. Green.
