6th son, born at 11 Bedford Square, London, aforesaid 28 June and baptised 13 August 1829 at St. Giles-in-the-Fields, aforesaid. Educated at Charterhouse, London 1839-43 and at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Matric at Oxford (Exeter College) 11 May 1848. Died at his residence 14 Norfolk Square, Paddington, 18 March, and was buried at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription there. Will proved 24 April 1890.

Ensign in 2nd Regiment of foot (Queen's Royals) 23 November 1849 by purchase for £450; Lieut. 1851 (purchase). Captain 1856 (purchase); Major 1870; sold out and retired 1877 with the rank of Lieut-Col. in the Army. Had foreign service in Cape Colony (where he went in ship Calcutta) arriving January 1854) and at Aden 1867 to beginning of 1869. He left the long lease of 14 Norfolk Square, Paddington, where he lived for many years, to his brother John, whose daughters Blanche Gibbs and Ethel Dickson inherited it.

Trained in his father's business, from the age of 15 he paid 6 visits of 6 to 10 months each to the Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) between 1801 and 1807. Present in Cadiz at the Spanish revolt against the French in June 1808, he reopened his father's house of business there and remained till 1810. Partner with his father in Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, (and in the Cadiz branch) from the founding of the firm in Sep. 1808. From 1815 till he died he was head of Antony Gibbs & Sons, who, under him and his brother William, opened branches at Gibraltar 1818, Lima 1822, Arequipa and Guayaquil 1823, Valparaiso 1826 (see the History of the Business in the book 'Antony and Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs). A director of the London Assurance Corporation 1822-42. A member of the club 'Nobody's Friends' 1832-42 and of the 'City of London Club' 1840-2. A member of the London Committee which (1832-5), with the Bristol Committee, promoted the Great Western Railway, and an original Director of that Company 1835-42. Between 1819 and 1840 he and his brother William voluntarily completed the payment of those of their father's and grandfather's debts which were still outstanding from their bankruptcy in 1789.

A few months before he died in 1842 he succeeded to most of the properties (for particulars see the book 'Antony and Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs) which his cousins Sarah (died April 1842) and Anne Noyes (died Dec. 1841) had inherited in 1814 from their uncle Robert Hucks of Aldenham, Herts (his mother's 2nd cousin): namely as heir at law to Sarah he received Aldenham House and other estates in Herts, and Middlesex; and under Anne's will, on Sarah's death, estates in Oxon and Berks, and in Lambeth, Surrey. With these properties he became lord of the manors of North Moreton, Berks (sold by his son Henry), Burston, Herts. (sold by his grandson, Alban), and Clifton Hampden, Oxon; and patron and lay rector of the last named. His residence was 2 Powis Place 1817-21, 11 Bedford Square 1821-42 (both in the Borough of Holborn). For note of portraits and sculptures of him see the book 'Antony and Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs, p. 435 and the Additions of 1927, to which add that a replica or copy of the portrait by Edmund Gill was in possession of Lord Cullen in 1932, who also had a miniature by Miss Ross (1860) (? founded on a portrait by Gill of 1843); and that a portrait in oils belonged to A. Gibbs and Sons (in 1932) after the min by Ross in Lord Aldenham's possession.

George married Caroline Crawley on 7 Jul 1817 in Stowe-nine-Churches, Upper Stowe, Northamptonshire. Caroline (daughter of Rev. Charles Crawley and Mary Gibbs) was born on 25 Apr 1794 in Clyst St George, Devon; died on 13 Feb 1850 in Wraxall, Somerset; was buried on 21 Feb 1850 in Clifton Hampden, Oxfordshire. Notes:

Caroline sold the lease of 11 Bedford Square in 1849 and resided at Aldenham House 1846-50. In 1843-6 she built at Clifton Hampden, where her brother in law Joseph Gibbs was Perpetual Curate, a new parsonage to take the place of the old one which Anne Noyes gave in 1832. By a re-exchange in 1905 the former is now the Manor House and the latter has since been demolised.

She also completely restored the church of St. Michael of All Angels there, mainly with money set aside by her husband when he inherited the property, but with contributions added by herself, and her son Henry. G Gilbert Scott was her architect in both cases. The Living was augmented under her Will. See article on Clifton Hampden in the book 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs pp. 447-50. After an apprenticeship in a Spanish business in Exeter he was from 1778 to 1789 a merchant there exporting woollen cloth to Spain and elsewhere; also from 1785 to 1789 a partner in a firm styled Gibbs Granger & Banfill, working a cloth factory at Exwick in the outskirts of Exeter. His father financed him and was also in the Exwick partnership. He was a member 1778 - 1789 of the Incorporation of Tuckers Hall, Exeter; head warden 1782, master 1783.

Bankrupt in 1789 (alike with his father), he went to Madrid and for the next 18 years was engaged in business which centred in Spain. Mainly working as agent for British manufacturers he was at times (from 1783) also exporting Spanish produce as partner in a firm at Malaga styled Juan Pomar Gibbs y Compania. Driven out of Spain by war in 1797 he conducted his business from 1798 to 1801 in Lisbon, but in 1802 became regularly established in Cadiz as a merchant there, till war again forced him away. His last visit to Spain was in 1807.

In 1808 he became one of the Commissioners in London for dealing with Portuguese property sent to England in the war, and in September that year founded, in partnership with his son George Henry, the firm of Antony Gibbs & Son, London, with a branch in Cadiz. The firm became Antony Gibbs & Sons in 1813 on admission of his second son William to the partnership.

He was author of a pamphlet signed "A Merchant," An Appeal to Common Sense on the Bullion Question, published 1810.

After his marriage he and his wife lived in Exeter 1784-6, at Exwick House 1786-9, in Madrid 1789-92. From 1792 to 1808 their home was in Exeter or its neighbourhood (at Cowley 1803-8), but in that period he made ten trips to the Peninsula of an average duration of 12 months each. The family moved to London in 1808 and lived in Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, 1808-9; Denmark Hill, Camberwell, 1809-10; Dulwich Common, 1810-12; 2 Powis Place in the parish of St George the Martyr, Bloomsbury, 1812 onwards.

The Hucks family became extinct in the male line at the death of her brother John in 1836. She was a beneficiary under the will of Henry Townley Ward (d. 1816) the husband of her elder sister Eleanor (d.1800). As a widow her home was with her daughter Harriett at Redland 1816-17, with her son George Henry at 2 Powis Place in London 1817-19, and again with Harriett July 1819, till her death. His mother Susanna was sister of Rev. John Lloyd, D.D. (d. 1788), rector and patron of Stowe-nine-churches, Northants. His elder brother was Sir Thomas Brawley-Boevey of Flaxley Abbey (successor as 2nd bart. to the baronetcy of Sir Charles Barrow of Highgrove, Gloucestershire, and grandfather of Matilda Blanche Crawley-Boevey, the wife of William Gibbs of Tyntesfield. Their sisters were Catherine (1753-1842), the wife of Rev. Duke Yonge (1750-1823), vicar of Cornwood, Devon, who has descendants; and Susanna (b. 1748, died childless 1880), who married (1) Edmund Bastard, (2) Sir Thomas Hyde Page, whose daughter by a second marriage, Mary Albinia, was mother of Matilda Blanche Crawley-Boevey above mentioned.

Charles Crawley and Mary (Gibbs), their children and numerous members of the Crawley and Crawley-Boevey families and of families connnected with them enter into 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs or are mentioned in it. There are also there pedigrees (pp 445-6) and references (e.g. pp. 35n and 445-6) to other books, pedigrees, etc., the most ont he Boevey family and their connections entitled 'The Perverse Widow', Ruvigny's 'Plantaganet Roll (Clarence, Vol. 1905) and Burke's Peerage. In 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J. A. Gibbs, pp. 439-43, and in the Additions of 1922 and 1927, there is also a list of portraits of members (born before 1820) of the Crawley and connected families.

Charles Crawley was curate, first of Broad Clyst nr. Clyst St. George, next till 1789 - of Whitestone, nr. Exwick. In 1789, inheriting from his uncle Dr. Lloyd aforesaid the living of Stowe-nine-churches, he moved there from Devon, and lived there for the rest of his life. From 1784 for at least 50 years he was also vicar of Broadway, co. Worcester, but never resided there. He bought Pytte in Clyst St. George (1790) when his father-in-law was compelled to give it up but sold it out of the family in 1796 or 7.

The children of Charles Crawley and Mary (Gibbs) were:
(a) Charles (1st son), born at Whitestone, Devon, 25 September, 1788; educated at Rugby School (entered 1797); matric Oxford (Univ. College) 26 June 1807; 2nd Cl. Classics School and B.A. 1811; married 14 May 1825 Eliza Catherine, daughter of Abraham Grimes (for which family see the book Antony & Dorothea Gibbs by J.A. Gibbs, p. 377 n6); died 30 September 1871 at his house (now called Lawn Upton and (1931) in the ownership of Lord Wraxall of Chart XVIII) in Littlemore, Oxon, and was buried at Littlemore. He was in Antony Gibbs & Sons 1814-46, and a partner 1820-38 (in Spain for them 1818-19, in Chile and Peru for them 1828-33). A director of the London Assurance Corporation, 1842-65. A member of the Club 'Nobody's Friends' 1813-71. Alternate patron with Oriel College, Oxford, of the living of Littlemore, to the church of which (built in 1835 by his friend, Rev. John H. The eldest child of his only child, Charles Edward, was William Scott Crawley of Charlbury, Oxon. (b. 1858).
(b) George Abraham Crawley (2nd son), born at Stowe aforesaid 26 September 1795; educated at Rugby School (entered 1808); married 29 September 1826 Caroline, daughter of David Powell (for whose family see 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs p. 377, n6); died at Ambleside 24th and was buried 31 July 1862 in Highgate Cemetry. He was articled in 1812 to Jones & Green, solicitors in London, admitted solicitor 1817, afterwards partner in Pemberton Crawley & Gardener, London, later Crawley Arnold & Co. Marshal to Chief Justice Sir Vicary Gibbs 1815. Many years legal adviser to teh National Society and Treasurer to the Additional Curates Fund. Member 1819-62, Secretary 1833-62, of 'Nobody's Friends'. A spcial memoir of him by G.E.Cokayne is in the book, 'Nobody's Friends' (privileged printed 1885). His home from 1839 onwards was Fitzroy Farm, Highgate, which he built. By his two married sons and four married daughters he has numerous descendants, and one of his grandsons, Canon A. Stafford Crawley, married Anstice Katharine, grand-daughter of William and Matilda Blanche Gibbs, above mentioned.
(c) Anne Crawley (1st daughter), born 4 August 1785 at Whitestone; married 21 April 1806, her 1st cousin, Rev. John Lloyed Crawley (Boevey), born 1775, died 1850, record of Heyford, Northants, 2nd son of Sir T. Crawley-Boevey; died 2 January 1865 and was buried at Heyford. She had eight sons and three daughters and numerous descendants of hers are still living.
(d) Mary Crawley (2nd daughter), born at Whitestone 25 October 1786; died at Rugby unmarried on 16 April 1865, and was buried at Stowe aforesaid.
(e) Susanna Crawley (3rd daughter), born at Exeter 28 April 1790; died at Rugby unmarried on 14 April 1865, and was buried at Stowe.
(f) Elizabeth (4th daughter), born at Stowe 29 July 1791; died 3 January 1884; married 24 September 1811 Rev. George William Daubeny (1784-1860), for whose family see 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs, pp. 254 and n, and 446, and Burke's 'Landed Gentry' under Daubeny of Cote. She had six sons and three daughters, and numerous descendants of hers are living.
(g) Isabella (5th daughter), born at Bristol 23 October 1792; died young.
(h) Caroline (6th daughter), 1794-1850, married her 1st cousin, George Henry Gibbs, brother of William Gibbs, mentioned at the beginning of this note.
(i) Charlotte (7th daughter), born at Stowe 25 February 1799; married 7 October 1822 her 1st cousin, Rev. William Crawley (1790-1856) (5th son of Sir T. Crawley-Boevey, 2nd baronet), perpetual curate of Flaxley; died 14 December 1878. She had one son and three daughters and numerous descendants of hers are living.

Charles married Mary Gibbs on 12 Apr 1784 in Exeter Cathedral, Exeter, Devon. Mary (daughter of George Abraham Gibbs, of Pytte and Anne Vicary, of Dunkeswell) was born on 2 Jan 1759 in Exeter, Devon; died on 31 Oct 1819 in Stowe-nine-Churches, Northamptonshire; was buried on 8 Nov 1819 in Stowe, England. George Abraham Gibbs of Pytte succeeded in 1744 to Pytte and other property in Clyst St. George as heir at law (after his father) to his great uncle George Gibbs, by arranging for the ending of a tenancy to the family of Rev. F. Pease, rector of the parish, created under dispositions made by the said George. In 1749 that family also transferred to him 15 acres in Clyst St. Mary (part of the "Manor of Ashmore") which were subject to the charitable charges which the same George had imposed on them. He bought Court Place in Clyst St. George, made 100 acres in that parish.
He was a Presbyterian in the early part of his life. In October 1745 he was enrolled in an Association of Exeter men in support of the King against the Young Pretender. He was one of the surgeons (eventually chief surgeon) of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter from 1747 to 1781, and thereafter on its standing committee. His residence in Exeter during his married life was in Palace Yard, Cathedral Close.
Becoming bankrupt in 1789 through the failure of business in which he was engaged with his son Antony, he lost all his property in Clyst St. George and Clyst St. Mary, including Pytte, which was bought in 1790 by his son-in-law, Rev. Charles Crawley. He used the arms of Gibbs of Fenton like his great uncle George and his cousins of Exeter.

Believed to belong to the family of Vicary of Dunkeswell, Devon, but proof lacks other than that papers exist sealed by her husband, and by her sister's husband, Hugh Mallett, with their own arms impaling the Vicary arms, or (after the death of the last of her brothers) bearing them on an escuthcheon of pretence (see G.A.Gibbs's will and a letter of 1793 in Aldenham Genealogical Cols, Vol. A, p.223 and Vol. C,1 p.383; also Gibbs Ped. 1904 edn p.xvii and its Preface of 1903). Her husband's house in Palace Yard, Exeter, continued to be her home till her death. Her first cousin Samuel Munckley was the founder of the Bristol house of business which later became Gibbs Bright & Co.

The family name was originally Crawley but his grandfather took the name of Crawley-Boevey under the terms of the will of William Boevey of Flaxley Abbey in 1692. Only the male descendants of the eldest some seem to have used the additional surname.
