    While in Rhodesia was Chairman of dairy branch association and Vice-Chairman of local Farmers Association. Church Council member and member of board of boys prep school and girls finishing school.

    1959-72 Rhodesian Police Reserve. 1969-77 Vice-President of Centre Party which was the only party to have members elected to oppose Ian Smith's Rhodesian Front Party.

    1977 Moved to England with his family and from 1977-78 attended Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Advanced Farm Management Course.

    1979 joined Booker McConnell Ltd. and seconded to Big Falls Ranch (Booker Agriculture INternational Ltd.) Belize, as General Manager of 37,000 acres of Rice/Cattle project.

    Interests and hobbies: Most branches of Natural History, ornithology and archaeology. Has travelled overland from London to Capetown and has also participated in many natural history expeditions in Rhodesia and bordering countries; fishing and most other outdoor activities.

    Farming in Rhodesia, near Bulawayo, since 1928. Founder Member and later Chairman of the Natural Resources Board; Founder Member of the Rhodesia National Farmers Union which encouraged Rhodesian farmers to produce more food for Britain in the Second World War. Member of Parliament (United Party) 1947-53; Chairman of the United Party for many years. One of the two originators of the Central African Trade Fair (later the Rhodesian Trade Fair).

    Governor of Southern Rhodesia 1959; last Governor General (Acting) of the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland. In 1965 after the Prime Minister of Rhodesia, Ian Smith, announced the 'Unilateral Declaration of Independence,' he remained at Government House for 4 years. In 1969 he was allowed to leave after a Referendum in Rhodesia which resulted in the declaration of a Republic.

    Member of the Board of Barclays Bank for many years (except during his Governorship) until his retirement in 1978. Member of Wankie Colliery Board; Commercial Union Board, Premier Portland Cement Board and Gibbs & Co.

    Active in the establishment and continuation of Private Schools, both Junior and Senior, Chairman of Ruzawi Board of Governors.

    Knight Commander of the Order of St. John since 1963; Member of the Council for the Blind.

Author of 'History of Gibbs of Fenton' in Dartington (1925), 'The Parish Registers of Hunsdon (1915)', several pamphlets on Bimetallism and the Currency, 1894-5, including 'A Bimetallic Primer' 1894 (rd ed. 1896), and one on 'The Incidence of Income Tax and Wasting Securities (1904)'. His evidence on 'Wasting Assets Abroad' before the Royal Comn. on Income Tax of 1920 is in an appendix to their Report.

    He bought Biggens in the parish of Hunsdon and the lordship of the Manor of Hunsdon in 1908. His successive London residences from 1885 were 34 York Terrace, 17 Portman Street, 9 Portman Square (1898-1923), all in St. Marylebone.
