Captain Richard Bennett Lloyd

Notes:

Richard Bennett Lloyd, came from a wealthy family who owned tobacco plantations. He served as an English soldier in the Coldstream guards between 1773-1775. He resigned after his marriage and because of growing enmity between England and America. In 1773, the couple had their portraits painted in London. Richard was painted by the celebrated American artist Benjamin West.

Richard married Joanna Leigh on 27 Jul 1775 in Isle of Wight. Joanna (daughter of John Leigh and Amelia Turner) was born in 1752 in North Court, Isle of Wight; died on 19 Aug 1814 in England; was buried on 26 Aug 1814 in Southampton, Hampshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Third son of Col.Edward Lloyd, II and Sarah Covington the Quakeress and the first husband of Ann Rousby, of Patuxent by whom he had these children: Elizabeth, who became the wife of General Cadwallader, of Philadelphia; Henrietta Maria, who merely perpetuated the name of that excellent lady, her grandmother, and died unmarried; Colonel Edward Lloyd, IV who became master of Wye House and would be married to Elizabeth Tayloe, of Virginia, the mother of Edward Lloyd, V, the Revolutionary patriot; and Richard Bennett, who, going to England became a Captain in the Coldstream Guards, and married a celebrated beauty, Joanna Leigh of North Court, Isle of Wight, England. A full length portrait of Capt. Richard Bennett Lloyd by Charles Willson Peale, painted 1775, hangs in the drawing room at Wye House.
