Eldest son of John Charles Molteno. At a very young age, Charlie became his father, Sir John Charles Molteno’s, secretary. In this role, he not only assisted him in his political duties as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, but also increasingly looked after his diverse business interests. Following his father’s death in 1886, Charlie managed the main family farm at Nelspoort for many years in association with his cousin, H. A. Jackson. He decided to enter politics on his own account in 1894 and was elected to the Tembuland constituency in the Transkei. He continued as an M.P., with one short break, up to the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910.

He married in 1897 an American, Lucy Mitchell, whose family had close South African connections, and he and Lucy settled into their new home of Sandown in Rondebosch, about four miles from the centre of Cape Town, in 1899. They lived there for the rest of their lives together. Charlie died of pneumonia following a routine operation in 1924. His political contributions included opposition to the Boer War, and a growing recognition of the overriding importance of African South Africans playing a full role in Cape politics. On his death, Ons Land described him as ‘a man of firm principles and of earnest convictions. He was a man of character and a strong personality.’

Elected to the first legislature of the Cape Colony in 1854. Pressed for responsible government (whereby the executive of ministers is accountable to Parliament, and not to the colony’s British Governor), and became the Cape Colony’s first Prime Minister in 1872. Married three times. His first wife, Maria Hewitson, died tragically in childbirth in 1845. By his second wife, Elizabeth Maria Jarvis, John Molteno had ten children who survived infancy and from whom the majority of Moltenos today trace their descent – Betty, Caroline, Maria, Charlie, Percy, Frank, James, Victor, Wallace and Barkly. Following the death of Elizabeth Maria, John Charles married ‘Minnie’ Blenkins; they had four children – Minnie, Ted, Clifford and Harry. None of these ever married or had children. John was knighted sometime after he had been ousted, contrary to established parliamentary convention, as Prime Minister by the then Governor.

Trained in his father's business, from the age of 15 he paid 6 visits of 6 to 10 months each to the Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) between 1801 and 1807. Present in Cadiz at the Spanish revolt against the French in June 1808, he reopened his father's house of business there and remained till 1810. Partner with his father in Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, (and in the Cadiz branch) from the founding of the firm in Sep. 1808. From 1815 till he died he was head of Antony Gibbs & Sons, who, under him and his brother William, opened branches at Gibraltar 1818, Lima 1822, Arequipa and Guayaquil 1823, Valparaiso 1826 (see the History of the Business in the book 'Antony and Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs). A director of the London Assurance Corporation 1822-42. A member of the club 'Nobody's Friends' 1832-42 and of the 'City of London Club' 1840-2. A member of the London Committee which (1832-5), with the Bristol Committee, promoted the Great Western Railway, and an original Director of that Company 1835-42. Between 1819 and 1840 he and his brother William voluntarily completed the payment of those of their father's and grandfather's debts which were still outstanding from their bankruptcy in 1789.

A few months before he died in 1842 he succeeded to most of the properties (for particulars see the book 'Antony and Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs) which his cousins Sarah (died April 1842) and Anne Noyes (died Dec. 1841) had inherited in 1814 from their uncle Robert Hucks of Aldenham, Herts (his mother's 2nd cousin): namely as heir at law to Sarah he received Aldenham House and other estates in Herts, and Middlesex; and under Anne's will, on Sarah's death, estates in Oxon and Berks, and in Lambeth, Surrey. With these properties he became lord of the manors of North Moreton, Berks (sold by his son Henry), Burston, Herts. In 1843-6 she built at Clifton Hampden, where her brother in law Joseph Gibbs was Perpetual Curate, a new parsonage to take the place of the old one which Anne Noyes gave in 1832. By a re-exchange in 1905 the former is now the Manor House and the latter has since been demolised.

She also completely restored the church of St. Michael of All Angels there, mainly with money set aside by her husband when he inherited the property, but with contributions added by herself, and her son Henry. G Gilbert Scott was her architect in both cases. The Living was augmented under her Will. See article on Clifton Hampden in the book 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs pp. 447-50. Notes:

Dr. Philip Eduard Faure (February 1, 1811, Stellenbosch - December 7, 1882) was the first minister of the Dutch Reformed Church Wynberg, where he worked for 48 years, four times moderator of the Dutch Reformed Church's Cape Synod and six times actuator or assessor of the same body. Wynberg was his only congregation.

Faure left in 1828 after Utrecht for theological study. On December 7, 1834, he was confirmed as Wynberg's first teacher and served the congregation until his death on December 7, 1882. It was his eldest brother, Dr. Abraham Faure, who founded the congregation five years earlier on September 20, 1829, when he led the first religious practice on the farm De Onder Schuur, later the state president's home Westbrooke (currently Genadendal).

The Church gives him and dr. William Robertson commissioned in 1848 to visit the Voortrekkers in the Transgariep and to strengthen them spiritually. The two church leaders lie about 3,000 miles (4,800 km). On November 25, 1848, they founded the congregation of Smithfield as the third congregation in the later Free State, and the congregation in Bloemfontein continued to emerge the same year. The successful journey has done much to improve the tense relationship between the Voortrekkers and the Mother Church in the Cape Colony. The Free State town of Fauresmith, where the NG congregation Fauresmith was also founded in 1848, was named after Faure and Governor Sir Harry Smith when it was founded in 1850.

From 1850 on, Faure appeared as editor of the annual Church Almanac. He also founded the Theological Seminary in Stellenbosch in 1859.

At Wynberg he strives for the spiritual processing and education of the colored population. This leads to the establishment of a separate missionary congregation, which merged with the Wynberg congregation in 2008.

Faure has held numerous leadership positions in the church thanks to his ingenuity, versatility and business acumen. His sermons, speeches and writings have also been published. He was the first moderator of the Cape Synod in 1847, when he was only 36 years old. In 1857, 1863 and 1873 he held this post again.

    Personal life and origin
Faure was the eleventh and last child of Jacobus Christiaan Faure and Aletta Hendrina (born Blanckenberg). Four of their children died young. Their second child and first son were dr. Abraham Faure, who was a teacher of the Dutch Reformed Church Cape Town for 45 years. The latter linked his youngest brother on January 12, 1835 at Wynberg to Anna Wilhelmina Cambier (whose mother was also a Blanckenberg). Eight children were born from marriage: Wilhelmina Hendrina (born 1835), Jacobus Christiaan (1837), Aletta Hendrina (1839), Jan Gijsbertus Reijnier Cambier (1841), Philibert Carel Gerard (1844), Maria Cornelia (1845), Abraham Iodocus Heringa (1847) and Philip Carel Dirk (1849).

Abraham and Philip Eduard's grandfather, Abraham, was the son of the ancestor of the family in South Africa. He was born on 17 August 1717 and died on 22 July 1792 in Stellenbosch. From his marriage to Anna Maria Wium (September 30, 1731 to 1811, Philip Eduard's birth year), seven children were born, of which Abraham and Philip Eduard's father, Jacobus Christiaan, was sixth.

Faures' ancestor, Antoine Alexandre, was born in Orange on 2 February 1685 and died in 1736 in Stellenbosch. He fled to Prussia in 1703 because of his persecution because his grandfather Phillipe accepted the Reformed faith. From Prussia he settled in the Cape. His wife and the father-in-law of the Faures were Rachel de Villiers (1694 to 1773). They had seven children, of which Abraham sr. was the oldest.

John Charles was pulled out of school and got one or two nondescript jobs in the City. Facing such dead ends, four of the children (John, Frank, Fred and Alicia) emigrated as soon as they could – to the Cape Colony, Hawaii, and Victoria and New South Wales in Australia. The first of the Irish Wentworths to come to Australia could trace his ancestry through twenty generations from Robert of Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire in the thirteenth century.

He is our original ancestor whom we know about. There are no available records of who his parents were or where they lived. Anthony moved from Milan in Italy to England, probably directly, but possibly via Paris. He opened his first printselling shop in Pall Mall in 1783. For a short time Paul Colnaghi was in partnership with him; the famous firm of Colnaghis is still in existence in London today. Anthony married an Englishwoman, Mary Lewis. Unfortunately, no portrait of George Anthony exists. Instead here is one of the prints he sold.

Their children included James Anthony, John, Charles Dominic, Mary, Emma and Eloise. James Anthony, John and Mary were, it seems, the only children to marry and start families. Mary married Charles Busby Bristow, from where the Bristow-Molteno connection springs. John married Caroline Bower and is the ancestor of all Molteno descendants who have a South African connection. James Anthony married Mary Mylius. Anthony’s business prospered; the winding up of his estate after his death in 1816 took some years. His eldest son, James Anthony, was also a printseller, and an equally successful one for many years.
