Deacon 1911; Priest 1912; Curate of Woodlands, nr. Doncaster, 1911-13. Chaplain to Archbishop of York 1913-17. In the Great War he was voluntary chaplain for the Red Cross Society to the Anglo-American hospital at Wimereux 1915-17; chaplain to 4th Cavalry Brigade in France September-November 1917; chaplain to 1st Bn. Grenadier Guards November 1917 till his death. Brit. War medal and Allies' (Victory) medal of the Great War, issued to his mother.

Fellow of the Chartered Land Agent's Society and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors 1958; assistant to G. C. Laws at Westcote Barton, Oxfordshire, 1952-58; practising as Land Agent in general practice since from his house, Flintham House, Oaksey, Malmesbury, Wilts., his residence since 1957.

2nd Lieut. 10th Prince of Wales' Own Hussars, November 1902; Lieut., June 1904; Capt., October 1907; Major, February 1915. Retired, Sep. 1919, with rank of Lieut. Col. joining the Reserve of Officers. Brevet Col, Mar. 1932. In command of 5th Battalion The Somerset Light Infantry from 1928. Member of the Somerset Territorial Association from 1928. Was with his Regiment in India at Mhow, 1903-6, at Rawal Pindi,1906-12. In India played for his Regiment in the winning team in inter-regimental polo matches, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1912. Durbar Medal (1912). Attached to the Egyptian Army, June 1912-June1914 (Khor Shambat and Shendi).

In the Great War was in operations in France and Belgium, 1914-18; he embarked for France 11 Aug. 1914, attached to Headquarters 3rd Cavalry Brigade; joined 18th Hussars 3 Sep., and rejoined 10th Hussars, 20 October Wounded 1 Nov. at the 1st Battle of Ypres near Hooge, he rejoined from England, 12 March 1915. Wounded again at the 2nd Battle of Ypres near Potije, he returned to France 19 August 1915. At various times, 1915-18, was Acting Lieut. Col. 10th Hussars. Seconded to Tank Corps, 9 June 1918. Slightly wounded again, 23 August 1918, but remained on duty. His war service ended with a fourth wound suffered 17 October l918 near Vaud Audigny. (Mentioned in Despatches, Gazette, May 1917. Medals, 1914 Star; British War Medal; Allies' (Victory) Medal.

Member of Somerset County Council from 1922. Justice of the Peace for Somerset (Long Ashton petty sessional division) from 1924. 2nd Lieut. Coldstream Guards 1926; Lieut. 1929, Capt. 1940. Served with the Shanghai Defence Force 1927-28. Resigned from the Army, February 1930 and joined British Shareholders' Trust in the City of London, but remained on the Reserve until re-called to serve in the Second World War. Member of the Stock Exchange, and partner in David A. Sevan, Stockbrokers, from 1933-39. He was killed on June 1st 1940 while commanding No. 1 Company, 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards, at Hondeschoote, six miles behind Dunkirk while forming the rear guard of the B.E.F. He was buried by the villagers and afterwards buried by the War Graves Commission in Warhem Cemetery near Dunkirk. He is mentioned in the following books: "Fight Another Day" by J. M. Langley, published by Collins, 1974;
"No Dishonourable Name" by D. C. Quilter, published by Clowes, 1947; "The Coldstream Guards 1920-1946" by Michael Howard and John Sparrow, pub. by The Oxford University Press, 1951.

Buried 27 March 1886 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription in the churchyard on gravestone of Joseph Gibbs (his father). Will proved 17 May 1886.

At Eton he was in the School cricket XI, 1858, and football "Wall" XI, 1857. He worked for a year on the Devon, and Somerset Railway at Barnstaple, next in Paris and Spain; all in connection with Antony Gibbs and Sons. He was Corresponding Director in Mexico of the Mexican Railway Co. Ltd. 1868-74; on the London Board 1874 till death. He was sometime a director of the Union Bank of London, of the Union Bank of Spain, and of the Mexican Gas Works, and in partnership in the City of London with W. Bailey Hawkins, metalbroker, of Staginhoe Park, Herts.

Former Chairman of the South Kensington Branch of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and in 1978 elected a Life Governor for services rendered to the Fund. Author of gardening articles in The Royal Horticultural Society's journal The Garden (Vol. 101, Part 12, December 1976, p. 573-574) and also in House and Garden. She and her husband both enjoy gardening and travelling.

Secretary to the Royal African Society 1974-78. Dismissed November 1978 owing to differences with the Officers of the Society over, in the main, business dealings with Rhodesia, at that time an illegal regime, not recognised by Great Britain and with whom trade was illegal; and South Africa, a country whose black population she considered to be exploited badly by British firms.

November 1979 joined Threshold Foundation Bureau, an organisation which holds the belief that the world, on the Threshold of the 1980's, is on the Threshold of a New Age. It exists to promote projects that recognise the dangers of world collapse by armed or economic might and the need to heal the divisions by creating alternative life-styles.

1949 left the Army and worked in a small merchant bank for a number of years. 1959 joined Gerrard and Reid (Discount House), now called Gerrard and National Discount Co. Ltd. of which he was Managing Director. Chairman Astley & Pearce Holdings Ltd., international foreign exchange and currency deposit brokers.

Appointed by The Queen to be Keeper of the Privy Purse and Treasurer to The Queen from January, 1981.

2 sons and 1 daughter: Edward Napier Tremayne Miles, born 1958 who gained the Galsworthy Scholarship (open) to New College, Oxford; Patrick William Miles, born 1960, educated Eton; Davina Mary Evelyn Miles, born 1964.

Died unmarried in London from the effects of an operation 13th and was buried 18 May 1899 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription in churchyard there. Will proved 13 July 1899.

Was in Antony Gibbs & Sons' London and Liverpool offices 1890-92. An original director, 1894-99, of Blyth Greene Jourdain & Co., Ltd., London. Author of A Cotswold Village (1st edition. 1898, 2nd 1899, popular edition. 1909, Travellers's Library edition. 1929) and The improvement of cricket grounds (1895). The former went through more editions to cover a record span of 65 years of printing and publishing by John Murray.

691 Baptised 28 December 1895 at Meerut. Educated at Cheltenham College, 1909-13 and Royal Military College, Sandhurst, 1917 (prize Cadet).

He played both for Cheltenham and Sandhurst at cricket and hockey. 2nd Lieut. Indian Army 5th August 1914, attached to 4th Dublin Fusiliers: temp. Lieut. December 1914, he went to the Great War in France with the Royal Irish Regt.: invalided in 1915 he rejoined the Indian Army Dec. 1915 as Lieut. 6th Royal Jat Light Infantry (now 1st Bn. 9th Jat Regt.): Capt. 1918: served in Mesopotamia 1918 and was invalided with typhoid fever: A.D.C. to Major General Sir Arthur Scott commanding Lucknow Division 1919: rejoined 6th Jat. L.I. on North West Frontier 1919 and was adjutant to the Regiment and on active service in Waziristan 1921-23: retired from Indian Army May 1923. Held the 1914-15 Star, British war medal and Allies' (Victory) medal of the Great War and the Indian Frontier medal with clasp.

He and his wife were living in 1932 at Dover Cottage, Hightown Rd., Roehampton. 1 daughter: Gillian Iris, b. 19 Dec. 1927.

Served in the South African (Boer) War in operations in Cape Colony July 1901 to May 1902, and was awarded the Queen's medal with three clasps. Adjutant 3rd Battalion Coldstream Gds., Ap. 1904-Ap. 1907. Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy of India (Earl of Minto) Sep. 1907-June 1910. Captain January 1910.

In the Great War he served in France and Belgium in 1914. Captured at Gheluvelt 29 October 1914, he was kept a prisoner of war at Stralsund, Heidelburg, Holzminden, Freiberg, etc., in Germany, was transferred to and interned in Holland, Feb., 1918, and was released 12 Jan. 1919. Awarded Military Cross 1920, 1914 Star, British War Medal, Allies' (Victory) Medal. Major 1915, Lieut. Colonel Ap. 1919, Col. Oct. 1924. Commanded 1st Battalion Coldstream Gds., 1920-21. Commanded 129th (S. Wessex) Infantry Brigade (Territorial) 1928-30. In command of Coldstream Guards Regt. and Regtl. District from Aug. 1930.

Lived from 1927 at Estcourt Grange, Tetbury, Glos. Portrait of himself (as a Russian) and one of his wife (with four dogs) last in possession of David Evelyn Gibbs.
