Chairman Caledonian Building Society and later Scottish Director British and West Building Society. In 1982, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant of West Lothian, and he served as Lord Lieutenant of West Lothian from 1985 to 2002. Played polo for Scotland 1977 and 1979 in Kenya.
