- He was of Member of Parliament and was appointed Privy Counsellor. He was given the name of Alexander James Beresford Hope at birth. In 1854 his name was legally changed to Alexander James Beresford Beresford-Hope. In February 1854 he inherited Bedgebury Park, Kent and Beresford Hall, Staffordshire from his mother's second husband, General William Carr Beresford.
