He gained the rank of officer in the 17th Lancers. He was Aide-de-Camp to the High Commissioner to Egypt between 1925 and 1928. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Scots Guards. He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1944.
