- He gained the rank of Captain in the Gordon Highlanders. In 1911 he carried Royal Standard of Scotland in place of his father at King George V's Coronation. He fought in the First World War in 1914, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 5th Battalion, Black Watch at France. He succeeded as the 10th Earl of Dundee and as the 12th Viscount Dudhope on 1 February 1914.
