He was Master Merchant Venturer in 1708 at Bristol, Gloucestershire, He held the office of Mayor of Bristol in 1710 In 1715 he helped suppress the Jacobites. He held the office of Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1716. He was created 1st Baronet Elton, of Bristol on 31 October 1717. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Bristol between 1722 and 1727.

Buried 8 April 1914 at Bourton. Memorial Inscription in churchyard there, and Memorial window in Taunton parish church (south aisle) to him and his 2 soldier sons designed by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale. Will proved 20 June 1914.

He was Military Secretary to Sir Bartle Frere in S. Africa 1877-80 and served in the Kaffir and Zulu wars and in the first Boer war. Between 1882 and 1885 he had war service in Egypt and in 1885 (when only 38 yrs. old) was Adj. Gen. and 2nd in command of the Egyptian Army. Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria 1886-88. Attended the French manoeuvres 1887 and the German ones 1888. Military adviser on Sir Charles Euan Smith's mission to Fez 1892. Assistant Inspector General of Ordnance at the War Office 1894. Commanded the North Western District, England, 1902-6. Mentioned in despatches in Zulu war and Egyptian expedition 1882. Medals for Kaffir and Zulu wars with clasp for 1877, 8 and 9. Medal and Khedive's star for Egyptian expedition 1882. Turkish orders Medjidie and Osmanieh, 1884. CMG. 1880, CB 1893, KCB. 1911.

Notes:

Annabel S. Gault, was born at Midhurst, Sussex in 1952, daughter of David Hamilton Gault and his wife Felicity Jane née Gribble (1929-2017), who married at Midhurst in 1950, a sister to Katherine Gault [Hamilton q.v.]. Annabel studied at West Surrey College of Art, 1973-1977 and at the Royal Academy Schools, 1977-1980. She married in London in 1982, Jonathan Michael Franklin but continued to paint as Annabel Gault. Annabel's garden at Knodishall Hall, Saxmundham in Suffolk, tended and planted by her husband, with intimate corners, glimpses through, but also with fields and wild spots, is an inspiration from where Annabel's paintings and drawings are grounded. Her charcoal drawings of Suffolk and the Australian Outback are beautifully drawn and sparkling with energy. Since 1973, Annabel has exhibited at many group exhibitions with solo shows in Colchester, Oxford, Woodbridge, Ipswich and at the Arts Council of Wales, Welshpool. On repeated visits to New Mexico 2005-2008 she produced a series of paintings, from the arresting desert and, just before her 2010 Redfern exhibition, began working on an extremely large-scale oil paint on paper which was exhibited at Campden Gallery, London the following year. Her work is held in public collections including the Arts Council of Great Britain, The Government Art Collection, Hampshire County Council, ING Barings, Cazenove Group Plc and The British Museum. Annabel is the author of 'Annabel Gault: New Work' (2012).
