Headmaster of "Tudor House" Preparatory School nr. Mossvale, N.S.W. from 1931-38. Elected Vice-Chancellor, Melbourne University in 1938 from which post he retired in 1951. Knighted 1948.

David served in the Second World War in the R.A.N.V.R as the Radar Officer and was sunk in HMAS Canberra just before the Battle of the Coral Sea, safely rescued luckily by the Americans.
