He was in the Eton School Football XI 1906. Won Royal Tennis, single and doubles, Cambridge v. Oxford 1910. Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1910, and was with their Australian branch, Gibbs, Bright & Co., 1912-14. After the Great War rejoined the London firm 1919; partner thereof from 1920. Director of, amongst other Companies, Commercial Union Assurance Co., Ld., from 1921 (Chairman 1928-29), Australian Pastoral Co. Ld. from 1922 (Chairman from 1929), Westminster Bank Ld. from 1924, English Scottish and Australian Bank, Ld., from 1920. On the Livery of the Merchant Taylors Company from 1910, on the Court from 1923, Master 1932.
2nd Lieut. Hertfordshire Yeomanry (Territ) Feb. 1911-15; temp. Lieut. July, 1915, Capt., Dec., 1916. In the Great War; mobilised with the Herts. Yeomanry in August 1914 he served with them in Egypt Sep. 1914 to Aug. 1915, in Gallipoli August to October 1915 and in Palestine June 1916 to April 1917 and to XXI Corps Staff Intelligence there December 1917-January 1918. Served with the 'Dunster Force' in Mesopotamia and Persia January 1918 to January 1919 and with Herts. Yeomanry in Asia Minor January to April 1919. Mentioned twice in Despatches (1917 and 1918). Medals, 1914-15 Star, British war medal and Allies (Victory) medal.
