1st son. Baptised at Christ Church, Guildford. Educated at Tunbridge School 1895-9.

2nd Lieut. 3rd Battln. (Militia) Somerset Light Infantry August 1900; Lieut. 1905; Capt. October 1908 (Reserve); Major regular army Reserve of Officers (2nd class) since 1920. Served in the S. African (Boer) War February 1901 to May 1902 with the 4th Battn. (Queen's medal and 1 clasp). Hon. Lieut, in the Army May 1902. Sometime (up to 1914) a Rubber Planter in Malaya.

In the Great War rejoined 3rd Battn. Somerset Light Infantry from Malaya November 1914. In France with 1st Battn. February to May and July 1916 to April 1917 when he was appointed to command 1st Battn. East Lancashire Regiment during the last phase of battle of Arras (including capture of the Roux chemical works) and remained with this Regt. till August. Served again with 1st Battn. Som. L.I. in France December 1917 to May 1918. Was in command of 1st Battn. Hampshire Regiment May to October 1918 serving in the resumption of offensive, capture of the Hindenburg line, &c. Returned to 3rd battn. Somerset L.I. in Ireland Oct. 1918. M.C. 1917. Despatches 1917. 1914-15 Star, British War medal, Allies' (Victory) medal. In the Officers'
